This new normal has definitely put a dent in my social life–can I get an amen?! Get togethers are few and far between and instead of grabbing a drink with friends, we are sipping tea over zoom.  Even though I miss sitting outside on a restaurant’s patio in the cool late evening breeze (especially in summer), I definitely do NOT want to potentially put my family or myself at risk of getting ill.  So, to replicate that “just grabbing a drink” feeling, I’ve been experimenting with a little mixology at home.

Since I nursed my daughter for a long period of time after giving birth, I took an extended hiatus from alcohol.  What I realized after going that long without it is … I can live without booze.


Yes, really.  What I really crave in a drink is the crispness alcohol adds to almost any cocktail. But I’ve found ways to achieve the same satisfaction even if we are low on certain libations. Hey, a nursing mama has to learn workarounds!

For example, the mocktail below, featuring Zespri SunGold Kiwi fruit, is crisp, refreshing, a little sweet and the right amount of tart.  Don’t worry, I see you shaking your head over there. I got you–I also have instructions on how to make this alcoholic, you lush! 😉

Kiwi fruit are a good source of fiber which can help with your diet, dehydration and an array of digestive problems. It’s also high in vitamin C, which is essential for good health, especially since our bodies do not produce vitamin C naturally (a plus for nursing mom!).  You’ll also be loading up on antioxidants, potassium and folate.   Keep in mind, I’m not trying to say that this mocktail is healthy–no, no, no, no, no. But the Kiwi fruit does add in some benefits to this not-so-unhealthy treat. See? I’ve got your back.

What you’ll need:

Serving size: 2

  • 2 Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tbsp raw, granulated brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • 8 oz. cold lime-flavored sparkling water


  1. Combine the sugar, ginger and sparkling water in a shaker or large, bottle. Shake until thoroughly blended.
  2. Pour into two glasses.  If you prefer, you can also add ice.
  3. Add fresh slices of Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit and serve right away

Note, if you’re hankering for something a little stronger, 3 ounces of vodka or rum would go nicely.  Just be sure to decrease the volume of water in the recipe by 3 ounces as well.
